Statement of Intent

For my coursework I will be creating the first two covers and contents pages of ‘Scene’ magazine along with it’s accompanying website.

To meet the requirements of the brief, when creating my magazine and website, I will stick to the codes and conventions of other entertainment magazines while still creating a unique identity for ‘Scene’ to attract the target audience to something new and different. To make sure my products fit the codes and conventions of a typical entertainment magazine, I will include, a masthead, centred at the top of the cover pages, a limited amount of cover lines and one main image on the front covers. For the contents pages I will have what is featured in the magazine, including articles about both up and coming and mainstream films, celebrities, etc. Finally, for my website I will follow the conventions of an entertainment magazine website by having my ‘Scene’ logo at the top of every page, I will have links to various social media sites, which links to the target audience because 16-25 year olds will be very involved with social media, and various articles and online exclusives.

To make ‘Scene’ have its own identity as an entertainment magazine, I will have the main articles and cover lines focus on small, up and coming celebrities rather than on mainstream stories to show that, as a magazine we value helping these smaller celebrities grow and give them more attention in the industry. This will target the audience as they like to see newer talent rather than the same mainstream celebrities. So by focusing more on up and coming celebrities it will attract them to my magazine.

While creating my magazine and website I will make sure to construct representations. To do this I will use different models from different social groups, for example I am going to use a female model on one cover and a male on the other. I will also use models who are within the same age group as the target audience so that the audience can relate to the models.

I will make sure that there is a clear link between my cover and contents pages by; using a similar colour palette and using an image from the same photoshoot as the image on the front cover. Then I’ll link both of these to my website by using the same logo on each product, showing the article from the most recent magazine cover clearly on the home page, and I will have the website address on the contents page to direct readers to the website. 

My website and magazine will have unique features such as a recommendation section of TV shows and films. This will attract the target audience as they will be interested in new films and TV shows to watch. Also, by doing this it will keep them coming back for weekly recommendations and therefore, using ‘Scene’ magazine and website as a frequent source of seeing the latest news in the entertainment industry.
